Fidelity Bank Gives Water to Blind Students in Umuahia

Fidelity Bank Plc has continued to demonstrate its commitment to helping the less privileged in the society by embarking on projects that would positively impact on their lives and thereby, make the world a better place to live.

This much was amply illustrated at the weekend by the staff of Fidelity Bank, Umuahia , who under the platform of the Fidelity Helping Hands Programme, FHHP, an arm of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, put smiles on the faces of students of the Special Education Centre for the Blind, Afara Umuahia, Abia State by reactivating two water boreholes in the school thereby making drinking water available to the blind students.

Commissioning the project, Hon. Lady Grace Nkem Uche representing Umuahia Central Constituency in the State House of Assembly expressed delight at the spirit of charity among the Fidelity management and staff. Hon. Uche noted that such spirit is rare especially amongst people in the commercial sector who are mostly profit–driven in their operations. She commended the Board and Management of the Bank for a job well done and called on other corporate organization to emulate the bank.

“I have never seen this before where staff will use their own funds to help a community in need. This is a first and it is a challenge to all of us in the State that we can do more. I will definitely take this back to the House and also convey this laudable act to the Governor later on.”

Earlier in his welcome address, Mr. Reginald Ihejiahi, Managing Director & CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc had noted the passion the Bank has for communities in which it does business. Ihejiahi who was represented by Enyinnia Uchenna, Regional Manager, Imo & Abia Region, said that the bank does not pretend to have solutions to all the problems of mankind but that it can contribute in its own small ways in making life better in the society by affecting its immediate environs for good. “We believe that though we alone are not able to solve the problems of mankind, we can do something. And we have been doing something”.

The FHHP borehole project at Special Education Centre for the Blind, Afara Umuahia, Abia state is the fourth water borehole intervention project handled by staff of Fidelity Bank Plc. This comes after earlier water projects in Calabar, Uyo and Jos.

The story of Umuahia is particularly moving as some of the blind students in the past had been knocked down by hit-and-run vehicles when the students had gone to fetch water outside the school premises. The students were therefore overwhelmed with joy at the gift of the boreholes by Fidelity.
