Keshi Gives Success Recipe to Gtbank Ambassadors

With the tips that made him what he is today, Super Eagles’ coach, Stephen Keshi, on Monday gave a pictorial description of his rise to the top to some students of Lagos State schools.

Keshi, who was one of the resource persons at the Guaranty Trust Bank’s (GTB) Tournament Ambassadors Programme (TAP), told the participants that there was no shortcut to the top, but that hard work and determination hold the key to success.

“I want to tell you that to be successful in life, it takes a lot of efforts and you must be ready to sacrifice to be a success,” he said. “What I am today is not accidental but by sheer hard work and God’s favour.
“I started like most of you and I was determined to make something out of life. So you must be ready to be alone in whatever you are doing. Being alone means that in whatever you do, you must not be expecting every other person to do same.”

The erstwhile coach of Mali added: “I know many of you want to be like me but I want to tell you that it is not going to be easy, but you must have confidence in yourself and also believe in God that you will make it in life.

“I came from a family of three girls and five boys and I started schooling at Ebenezer Primary School in Lagos Mainland and was also the pioneer captain of the Flying Eagles team, which was the first Nigerian side to qualify for a FIFA-organised World Cup.

“My life story is about confidence and knowing where you are going. I remember that my Principal at St Finbarr’s, Okotie, told me that if I couldn’t do well in my academics, I couldn’t play football. So it was not easy for me to combine the two.

“So, regardless of what you want to become in life, you must go to school because education makes you relevant even after quitting active sports.”
